Now add to that the dozen or so '03's and I wold never buy one with the 4.6 unless it was the GEMS 4.6 out of a early P-38.
With all that said I will still take my chances with a 4.6L with 217HP. Since the 4.0's have 188HP if I'm correct. I'll take the 29 more horses when its pushing the same heavy *** Rover up the hill and off the stop light line. The engine blocks are same so I wonder why the 4.0's are more reliable? I thought the only difference was the crankshaft, camshaft and Bosch ignition. With my cold air intake installed I'm guessing I am at 220HP now. It would be fun to find a AWD dyno and test it!

i wish we could get some cold hard facts because i disagree. i think the 4.0 and 4.6 have the same failure rate. you said 6 people i would say 10, now how many people registered to this forum have an 03 or 04 disco with a 4.6 in it. loads so the percentage of failure rate of people on the forum i think is fairly low. if we had some numbers to look at maybe it would change my mind. the real question is in 10 years what are we going to have turn to? the engines in the LR3 and LR4 are not that old Buick 205 but what about electrical issues. with 700 new parts on those things a lot more electronics i sure as sh*t hope they are more reliable

I never heard of the 03-04 engine issues. I knew some 03's had oil system problems but never heard of the engine cylinders cracking. Was there a particular VIN range that suffers from this or is it all of the 4.6L engines? Is there anything that can be done to prevent the failure?

How does the fuel mileage with the 4.6L compaire to the 4.0L engines? My friend has an 03 but his is lifted with big tires and a roof rack so I didn't think that would of been an even comparison to my stock '99.
