Some Maintenance done...

RE: Some Maintenance done...
so is there a solenoid that "kicks the gear out" or is it mechanical?
does this mean new starter or is there anything I can do?
does anyone have the PDF of a guide on the starter I have one of the transfer case and it is just a ****load of diagrams on how it works (not in the rave CD)

the solenoid is a mechanical deal that is electrically actuated. i believe on our starters you have to replace the starter and solenoid as a unit.

I also bet the gear it kicks out took a beating, so is that pretty attached to the motor?
does anyone have any good pictures?
Thanks
BTW: i ask all this as I am 17 with no money for doing repairs the proper way, so almost everything I get is from a junkyard, and the guy at the junkyard will charge 10 bucks for a solenoid and gear, but 100 for a starter

some vehicles the starter and solenoid are separate and can replaced as such. others are a unit. i believe ours are a 1 piece unit.
the starter gear is attached to the solenoid and will get replaced with a new starter. thats a no brainer BUT if the flywheel gear teeth got munched up then that is a bigger and much more expensive problem as it is attached to the back of the engine and sandwiched between the tranny.

What sucks is that if you let it go to long you will chew up the teeth on the flywheel, that is a big money repair because you need to pull the engine or drop the tranny.
Take your starter out, tear it apart, if you can fix it for $10 great, if not you'll be buying a used starter.
www.roverlandparts.com, see how much they want.
