Some upkeep questions
I am about to attempt an oil change, tranny drain and fill, and I would like to service the differentials and transfer case but have never done so before. I was wondering if I should just top them off or drain, and if drain, do I have to pump it out or what? Any advise would be welcome because I always find a way to screw up the simplest of mechanical tasks. From searching the forums I figure I need 6 quarts of dexron 3 ATF fluid, and 75w/140 gear oil (don't know how much), 7 quarts syn oil (thinking 10w40 but open to suggestions) and am trying to decide between the mobil 1 filter or k&n. BTW: I was planning on adding some lucas ATF additive so does that affect how much fluid I put in and should I just pour it in first and then fill?
Thanks and I know these topics have been covered (I've actually read them, I just don't remember and have spent an hour searching the forum)

there is a sticky on what you need and what you need to do that mike make, the 60k mile maintainence.
I drained all the fluids and put new ones in, I talked to mike and he recommended valvoline oils because of some of the additives they have. I run all synthetic valvoline oils now in everything
Also, since you have over 100k miles now, I don't think its advisable for you to do a flush of anything, just change the fluids, change the transmission filter, change the belt, hoses, you get the idea.

Yes you will need a pump to refill the diffs and t-case, you will want 7 qts or gear lube on hand, each diff and the t-case take 2 qts, allow for spillage and what you cant get out of the pump, so have 7 on hand.
Put in your additive, then your tranny fluid.
There is a drain plug for everything on these trucks.
10w-40 is a good all around choice.

I've had everything done on that list (except the tranny) but I'm really just wanting to do a thorough oil change and I need to learn how to do it so I don't get ulcers second guessing a grease jockey. I've always changed oil but have never messed with the tranny, t-case and diffs, leaving that to the "pros". Like I said, for some reason I can fix a house but not a automobile, I broke 4 tools trying to do the brake pads everyone says is a piece of cake. lol
