Spark Plugs and Wires for 01 D2 (7mm, 8mm, 8.5mm?)
Hey there --
I know there is a lot of opinion on this... Looking to put new plugs and wires in my truck. i have a 2001 D2 with 79k miles. Excellent condition.
Now --
Atlantic British has the kit Magnacore 7mm set with Champion Plugs: https://www.roverparts.com/Parts/NLP100320SKA

Does anyone have experience with the larger wires, like the 8.5mm?
I know everyone says these are just not going to fit in the wire holders, but I've seen other posts here with links to new holders... Found them here; https://www.summitracing.com/search?...e%20separators
Thoughts on just going with the 8.5mm, the Champions from AB, and new holders???

I’ve had good luck with kingsborne
i used 8mm from them- made right there by them in CA. Good service & a little heavier to handle the heat. They don’t clip into the wire retainers tho as I recall.
Also used oem replacements & even Napa auto parts brand- they all seem to work.

Anything larger than 7mm is honestly just wasting your $$. You will not see any performance increases at all. The extra insulation might help, but that’s about it. To get more performance out of the ignition system you’d have to swap out the coils with high performance coils and from what I’ve seen nothing is available for the D2 coil pack wise.
7mm have worked excellent for me for decades on LR’s. Just match them to a good quality plug (no Bosch 2x or 4x junk) and you’ll be good to go.
STI, Kingsborne, and Magnacore make great wiresets. Plug wise I prefer NGK, but Autolite Iridium’s are also very good.

Back in the day my 2 03 D2’s ate thru the OEM Grey Bosch spark plug wires almost quicker than they went thru fuel. The boots would get extremely brittle very quick & cause misfires galore. I’ve never had anymore issues using STI/Kingsborne/Magnacore spark plug wires. Anything but Bosch 2x/4x wise and you should be good. I personally prefer Iridium plugs from NGK/Autolite as they’re available locally and I’ve had excellent results. The only Champion spark plug I’ve touched in nearly 20 years = were for a chainsaw lol.

STI or Kingsborn are the good options. Mangacor don’t seem to have the quality fitment of years past.
I am a fan of copper core champions on these motors change them every 24k miles you would be amazed at the little problems you catch while poking around doing plugs.
You can do platinum if you want but once again this is not a performance ignition system.

D2's came from the factory with Platinum plugs if I'm not mistaken. Earlier LR V8's for sure used good old Champion Copper Core 404's. Copper/Platinum/Iridium all will work, but I would really really really stay away from the Bosch 2x/4x style plugs which foul extremely quickly due to the countersunk center electrode.
That stinks about Magnacore wires, especially for the $$$. Kingsborne have been excellent or STI.

X2 on Bosch plugs and Magnacore wires. My mags gave up after 50k...replaced with sti and no issues. Plugs have always been a discussion point on here, some plugs work in some rovers and some don't. I've tried them all and what works in my Rover are NGKs.
As for the 8mm wires, like was stated above they won't add any performance gains, but you can be a bit more liberal in routing them across the metal bits of the engine. I got fasteners for 8mm wires and made sure to keep them off anything metal but that's just me. The wires are a bitch of a job, especially if you have SAI so you only want to do it once.
