Default Speakers-with stock Harmon Kardon sound system

Hello,
I've been searching the form for a definitive list of possibilities that would work in our D2's without rewiring the entire thing. I called Crutchfield and they basically told me that I would have to get rid of the lower speakers in all 4 doors. That doesn't sound right to me. Why would I want to do that? As far as the rear subs go, I've heard I should buy a cheap stereo from wallmart and put them in the there for subs. Does this actually work? Does anyone know any specifics about what to do?
Thanks

Go to Best Buy, I believe they have a number of speakers and qualities that will work well if not better the the stock speakers.

I dont know why you'd have to get rid of the 6 1/2s in the door. All speakers should have a signal and a ground wire. If for some reason you need to bypass the factory amp here's the wiring diagram

I snipped the factory subwoofer cables and have a 12" and subwoofer/box.I dont think it's possible to get good bass with something that small. But if you need space i guess you could probably replace the paper woofers with something that had a decent propylene cone

I replaced the front and rear door 6 1/2s with some Rockford Fosgates from crutchfield. They cost like $60 a pair and sound amazing in the rear doors, but the front ones treble is pretty distorted. It is probably because the fronts are only getting sent a signal for bass. Maybe wiring the 6 1/2s in the fronts off the front doors mids would be better but I haven't had time to try that yet. Keep us posted on what you find out and end up going with!

I will visit them tomorrow.

They said that because no one makes coaxial speakers in that size. I really don't know about the difference in speaker wire to know what that is....

I would like to do this actually. Then I could take off the rear door pannel and put one of those nice stainless steel ones on there. Could you post pictures so we can see what yours looks like? Did you get a separate amp or inline converter? (really new to this speaker stuff)

That is really a unique problem to have. Isn't the signal in the rear doors the same as the front? Least I know I can get at minimal good sound in the rear doors. hahah I want this thread to be one of those that answers a lot of questions. Frankly there is no "go to" post about speakers in the DII.
Ill keep you updated!

The signal will only be left or right signals. However the head unit and factory amp will split it into four signals (Right channel front , right channel rear, left channel front and left channel rear). Also i believe in the factory system should have a low pass crossover that will limit the high frequency that goes to the factory subwoofer that's built into the factory amp located under the seat.

I am curious why you are replacing the speakers,do you have a blown speaker? I am still running the factory HK speakers with an aftermarket head unit and after market subwoofer and amplifier and they sound great.

Guitarded - how did you wire the amp and new sub? I am considering this job as my rear door subs are on the way out. I have a sub and an enclosure but am unsure on the wiring, any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks

I feel like it is a weird problem to have and the only way I can think to justify is that they are using a different crossover for the front doors. Each rear door only has 2 speakers, while each front has 3. I haven't had time to do much research on it, but does anyone know if the crossover is built into the amp or seperate and hidden in the doors or somewhere else?

You can replace the head unit easily with a Metra wiring kit. The kit provides four channel RCA outputs that work well with the amplifier in the D2. Plug and play, basically.

Any more, and you'll have to dig further.

like MChang said. Buy a wiring hardness designed for your Disco. In my case (a 2003 with the factory Harmon Kardon) Connect all the color corresponding wires to the back of the new head unit you purchase (it will have two blue wires if it's designed for the Harmon Kardon unit one remote power for the factory amp, and one remote power for your aftermarket subwoofer amp). You will also need to purchase an amplifier install kit which will consist of a power cable from your battery to the amp, a ground cable, a remote amp cutoff cable(blue small gauge wire)RCA cables(for your audio signal) and associated connectors

To run an after market sub/ amp setup in the back of your truck you'll need to run RCA and remote amp cutoff wire(blue) from your head unit to the back of your truck and a red power wire from your battery. I run the RCA and amp remote wire under the dash, glovebox (not the cleanest looking install, just the easiest for me), and down under the passenger side front and rear door sills. Accomplish this by just gentle snapping the sills upwards running your wires under it.

While you have your door sills off you should also run your power cable from your battery. Normally you would want to drill a hole in your firewall and snake it in that way...however i didn't feel like hitting anything of importance so i ran it along the hood seam and door jam.Which when the doors are close are completely hidden.

Run all the RCA, Amp, and Power wires along the front and rear door sills and gentle remove part of the carpet in front of the rear seats and snake them behind and up.

Now that all your wires should be in the rear of your Rover. I loosened this bolt in the rear cargo area under the carpet slit slightly and snipped one of the ground connector prong to sit securely when the bolt is torqued down to serve as a ground.

Then connect all the wires to your amplifier. And wire you sub box. And you're done.
