Discovery II has a timing chain.
With a 03 pulling the shaft and seeing if the noise is gone is out unless you installed a CDL transfer case. Unfortunately I don't have any spare DII shafts laying around.

if it is a grinding bearing (hub) you should be able to jack up either corner and hand spin test. neutral and spin. then again that much grinding would more than likely give you abs codes for a crazy sensor.
if your centering ball on the driveshaft is making that much noise, i would think a vibration would accompany it.........it doesn't have to, though. same with output bearing.
you really want to rule out the driveshaft possibility first.......that can be tested the same way but with both axles on stands.
