Default SRS light will not go off

I replaced my steering wheel on a 2003 D2. Did the correct thing by unplugging the battery and waiting 20 minutes. The horn works but the SRS light now comes on. I changed the steering wheel but am using the same airbag.

Is there anything to know to reset this. I have an ODB scanner but no codes come up so I can't clear a code.

Thanks in advance for any infomation.

A generic OBD scanner may not be able to call out the specific SRS error codes. Most SRS codes are related to a faulty rotary coupler or seat pre-tensioner. I have a Nanocom reader which will provide more specific info into the SRS fault.

When you say replaced the steering wheel, did you change the rotary coupler?

Thanks ACG.....I did not replace the rotary coupler but I did bend one of the tabs that locks it into the steering column. I found this out after taking off the steering wheel the second time in hopes that is was just a loose connection where the wires plug into the airbag. I did straighten out the locking lower locking tab of the rotary coupler and it snapped into the column nicely. I have a friend with a Nanocom and will see if I can find more information.

On a side note, while at car salvage yard I have tried to unplug the rotary coupler but I have been unsuccessful. Is there a trick for the connection?

Thanks

Depending what error code you get, you can solder in a 2.5 to 3 Ohm resistor at the pretensioner's yellow connector plug under the driver's seat to stop the SRS fault light.

It has been a while since I changed a rotary coupler. The toughest part for me was removing the torx screws at the back of the steering wheel. I remember using this video for reference:

P/S. Make sure to disconnect the battery. You don't want the airbag to go off on you when working on the steering wheel.

Default Thanks everyone

Thanks everyone for the replies.

The SRS light is now off. Thanks ACG for the correct diagnosis. I got a new (used) rotary coupler from a salvage yard and the install went fine.

I also have a P38 and have replaced the steering wheel. When I was working on the P38 the rotary coupler did not come disengaged from the steering column. When working on the D2 it had and I did not install it correctly the first time and must have broken it.

As for the connections I just needed to go deeper into the steering column and get behind the styrofoam insulation.

And yes the 30 torx screws are basically the hardest part of the job.

Thanks again
