Default SRS warnig Light question

HI I'm new to this forum, but not new to discos. Just boughr our 2nd- its a black 98 se. There were some issues when we test drove it so the used dealer said he would fix all 3 issues. He had one if the catalytic converters replaced and did some work on getting the ABS idiot light to go off (new front pads). But he called to say their Jag/Rover shop couldn't track down the reason for the SRS light without spending lots of time and money. The dealer offered to buy back the rig or reimburse us $250 and not do any more checking into the SRS.
I've decided to keep ther disco and look into the SRS on my own.( Stop laughing and shaking your heads!!!)
So..... I understand the SRS light can be triggered by several things- seat belt tensioner, battery disconnect, etc.- I'm thinking of taking the rig in to the Rover dealership to have it checked out. My maun question for this forum is.... since there is something causing the SRS light to be on,might the air bags inflate at some inopportune moment while we are driving ?
Also, just because the light is on , does that mean the airbags won't deploy if needed?
And Finally...with the proper diacnostic equipment, will an error code tell exactly which thing is tripping the SRS light?

thanks everyone

As far as I know when the SRS light is on it means that the bags willNOT deploy.
In the owners manual it says to have the SRS system checked by the dealer every ten years. So I think the best course of action would be to take the $250 and have the dealer check it out. And hopefully it is nothing more than a bad battery connection.

The air bags won't release while you are driving. Find a shop that has a lap top scanner like an Auto Logic. They can get far enough into the ECU to see what is wrong.
Could be the spiral ring in the horn assemby or like you mentioned, low voltage, seat belt. air bag or the control unit.
Let us know what you find out.

My SRS light would come on as a result of a poor ground.

Check your battery and alternator. Sounds like at least one of them is weak.

The two are not related, go get your codes read for the SRS and then deal with your horns later.

well, if its your clockspring, then they could be related. both horn and drivers air bag go through it. as to code pointing out what it is, generally, itll tell you what circuit is bad, if its drivers front, then its almost always the clockspring. if its a pretensioner then its almost always just the connection, that a little di-electric grease will fix right up. that said, its telling you what circuit, so there can also be a wiring issue and not an componant fault. rule of thumb... drivers bag, replace your clockspring. pretensioner, add di-electric grease to the connector (the pins, not just the shorting links)

Worked like a charm! Saved us $200 deductible on extended warranty. Thanks!
