Default starter (?) issues

Ok, when i go to start my '00 disco II it takes a couple of turns of the key to start the engine. The starter makes noise and the engine sorta fires a couple of times but doesnt catch. The problem is worse when the engine is cold. When it is at operating temp or close to it the vehicle starts normally (that is on the first turn of the key).
The starter sounds normal as well. no grinding no hesistation no etc no whatnot
Everything else is normal - guages, sounds, fuel, maintence, etc.
The only OBDII error codes I am getting is for my MAF sensor (it got wet during a water crossing a while back) and the recurring one for not-tight-enough gas cap.
suggestions?

btw 141k miles and only premium fuel.

Sounds like a fuel pump.
But to clarify...when cold it takes several trys to start in the morning?
Once warm it starts right away?

no issues once its started though.
we just went up and down some pretty impressive grades while playing this weekend and no issues with fuel delivery there.

any way to tell if its the fuel pump other than replace it?

Yeah there isn't any problems with the starter that I can tell after the rover has already been started. But.... After awhile it will tend to either lose power to where I have to stop vehicle and put it in neutral or park till I get a strong, normal idle. Occasionally she will die. But these Problems only seem to occur after we go 4 wheeling or have taken her thru water. The weird thing is she doesn't seem to have problems while we are doing the obstacles. They happen about 10 to 15 minutes after we complete them. Sometimes later. Cooling System fine. Oddly enough after these weird behaviors for her started the Check Engine light went OFF. You would think that if the rover was having troubles it would keep that light on.

When a weak fuel pump gets hot it can lose power/shut off.

ok, so wife now reports that rover wont start- at all.
sounds like a fuel pump. GRRR...
where can i get one for a reasonable price and do i hafta drop the tank to change it?
anyway to isolate the fuel pump as the problem part here?

note to the rover gods:
PLEASE DONT MAKE ME DROP THE TANK TO CHANGE IT!
I ASK THIS IN THE NAME OF ALL THE YANKEES WHO EVER LOVED AND CHERISHED THEIR ROVERS. ITS NOT OUR FAULT THAT WE ARE NOT BRITISH. IF I HAVE TO I WILL TALK WITH A FUNNY ACCENT AND CALL MY WINDSHIELD A WINDSCREEN. JUST DONT MAKE ME HAVE TO DROP THE FUEL TANK TO CHANGE OUT MY BABY'S FUEL PUMP...

Sorry I could not make it this weekend. Hope you guys had fun and got pics? You should be able to get to the pump from the top and its pretty easy if its similar to the Disco 1. Get it from the parts Rover in Auburn I told you about. If not I also have the number of a Rover junkyard in West Seattle.
