Default starter removal

Folks on the Forum, I need your wisdom! I'm trying to remove the starter from the motor, and according to the shop manual, I need to release the front pipe from the exhaust manifold. Those three little buggars are "really on there" , creating some concern that if I keep reefing on them to loosen, I'll snap the studs. Is there any work around, or is this a necessary step to create access during the removal/ installation process?

Thanks for everyones' input!

You do not have to touch the exhaust. Disconnect the battery, remove a 13mm nut holding the wire onto the starter, remove the small spade connector, and get an 8mm 3/8 drive socket and make sure the heads on the bolts are clean, then tap the 8mm into place and loosen it. If you can I highly recommend swapping those 8mm head bolts out for a normal headed bolt. I got my last pair at Fastenal. The hardest part sometimes is the 10mm bolt holding the darn heatshield into place!

Same, except the heatshield bolt is easy once you find it. I had a time getting the shield out/in a place so I could get the starter out. Nothing too hard about it, especially when you have done it once. I'm not sure why you would want to change the Socket head (Allen key) bolt, just make sure the socket is clean?

Note, if just your starter solenoid is dead that can be replaced for less than the whole starter.

Those OEM allen head bolts are famous for rounding out = small simple job just got a lot harder! That’s why I highly recommend making sure the heads are clean & that you’ve tapped the 8mm in before you attempt to loosen it. It can round off with just one failed attempt.

The 10mm bolt is easy to remove it’s lining it up that can be a PITA on the re-install.

Good info on here.
I've been putting off checking the condition of my V8 starter for some time now. I'll probably give the solenoid a good cleaning if it can be disassembled.
I'm all about preventive maintenance.

Unfortunately it's not like other solenoids that can be disassembled and new contacts installed, at least easily. The new solenoid I installed was only about $25 though.

Last few Parts Player RRC/D1/D2/P38 starters I bought new were only 54.00 off Amazon. I’m sure the prices have fluctuated up/down by now, but good quality starters.

Folks,

Thanks for the input! Friday Night Disco sent me a youtube vid from a guy that took off the front right wheel and inner fender for better access. With my franken-fingers, I'll probably need it.

Thanks for the advice, I got it out today within an hour. I had to exercise some patience with removing the heat shield, but after some manipulation, I was able to remove it by taking it out from underneath without having to distort it. I will say with confidence, that removing the front passenger wheel and inner fender cover made the whole process much easier.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in!
