Default Starter Changing Questions!

Hi All!

My beloved 1998/9(half year) Disco SD died a few months back - the last few times it started there was a massive grinding sound coming from where the starter is located. now when i try to start it, either one big click, or sometimes a rapid fire click. I'm 98% certain i need a new starter, and I'm going to replace it myself.

I'm decently savvy with working on this car - changed the serpentine belt, changed the front brakes/rotors myself, and I welded in a new exhaust system, so in order to save money I don't have - I am going to have to replace the starter myself as well. I have a few questions that will make this operation possible!

1. I see a lot of posts online talking about needing extenders to reach - can someone give me (if you have time) an exact list of tools/extenders/sizes I will need to pull this off? I have very few tools, but don't mind getting a few in order to do it!

2. if someone could tell me where the locations of the places I need to reach to get to the starter - I tried to remove the heat shield, but wasn't sure if i only popped it out or if it was actually removed. the location of the starter seems a little trickier than other cars I've seen it done on.

3. any general tips/things I will need to know before dedicating a day to do this would be great!

Thank you in advance!!!!!!

You are going to need about 18"-24" of extensions. Use several.

I would suggest a wobble extension as one of them.

You also need a size 8 Allen head socket on the end of the extension. There are 2 bolts total.

Line the Allen socket up and knock it into the fastener with a hammer, make sure it is well seated. Maybe even spray some high pressure brake cleaner into the Allen head to make sure it's cleared out. You don't want to strip the bolt head.

The heat shield is held on by a 10mm bolt at the front of the motor mount, then it pulls off. Did I mention to be careful not to strip the Allen head bolts?

Make sure you disconnect the battery before doing anything.

Also, did I mention you need to be careful not to strip the Allen head bolts?

Good luck.

Easier if you have 2 people. One to hold it at the bolt and one to turn the ratchet. That way you won't strip the allen head bolt.
