Default On starting, only click, no crank, all power dies

Hi,
I have a 2001 Land Rover Discovery 2. When I put the key in the vehicle all the lights turn on in the vehicle, but when I turn the key all the way to start, I hear a quick click and then all power is suddenly lost to the vehicle. Nothing works. It does not restore unless I disconnect the battery for a while. But the same thing happens when trying again. I installed a new battery and charged it. Same thing.
It's been down for a while, but a couple days ago I turned the key and it started straight up. Today I turned the key and it immediately died.
Any thoughts why it dies suddenly?
Thanks for the help.

I would inspect the quality of your battery terminals. When a D2 has power, then you try to start it, and you end up with absolutely nothing that's a classic sign you either have dirty/broken battery +/- leads, bad ground, or a dead/low charged battery.

Also check the ground cable that attaches to the bracket behind the belt tensioner.

I second both of the previous replies, I had the same issue and it ended up being a loose terminal connection on the negative post. I would take off both terminals and clean them, and then check the ground. Make sure both of the terminals do not move at all and have no corrosion. This should fix the problem.

I had the exact same issue. Took a small file and cleaned the INSIDE of both the positive and negative connections. No more issues.0
