Default Starting Problem

Thanks in advance for any help, I have a 2003 Disco with 98k miles. I went to start this afternoon after already driving earlier this morning, when I went to start the engine it cranked a little like the battery was real weak then it shut down, when tried again just loud ticking but no engine turnover, I disconnected the battery and checked terminals (just bought battery last March), everything looked OK, re-connected and same thing, engine cranked a little then stopped, the only thing that I could possibly think that I did out of the ordinary was take through an automatic carwash the day before. Just had new shortblock put in couple of months ago so should be all new. Also 1 week ago I went to start in the morning and it did similar thing but started after being a little sluggish, it turned out I left cargo light on all night but I checked this time.

Your battery is dead, either charge it or get a jump start and then have the battery and alternator tested.

Remove the battery and go get a good 2 hour charge on it, when done, go back to where you bought your battery or local auto parts store, have them check both the battery and alternator. You need voltage between 13.6 and 14.4 volts.

Ha, its funny, that happened to my Disco today too. When I put the key in, the system chimed but it did not even turn. All electric wouldn't work--the door wouldn't not lock or unlock. Good thing I had an extra battery at the garage. The old one has battery acid all over the top and the + and - were rotted.

Now, the Disco starts really fast without any hesitation like I was getting in the couple days. Aren't there suppose to be a warning light telling you the battery is dieing?

I just hope its not a bad alternator. It would cost too much.

Alternators dont cost that much.
$200 is alot when you dont have it, but cheap compared to a brand new LR ones.
www.autosportsunlimited.com has good used ones if you need it.

A used alternator works?

Yes, why wouldnt it? I have been through 2 brand "new" AutoZone alternators in 14 months, now I have one from Advanced Auto Parts and we will see how long this one lasts, its only been in a week and has 300 miles on it.
But the original alternator lasted 170,000+ miles before it went bad, and for the price of a used one with under 100,000 miles ($70 last time I checked) if I get 70,000 miles out of it it will still be a better investment than a "new" one from a discount autoparts store for $200.
A brand new LR one would be the best way to go but who has the $600 for one?

So now go back and get the alternator checked to make sure this is not what is causing your problem.

I have given up on parts store alternator rebuilds. They are very hit and miss.

I found a local place that rebuilds starters and alternators and haven't looked back since.

They normally charge me under $100 for a rebuild on a starter or alternator. They really don't care how much a "new" one costs, just what parts they have to put into it and how long it takes. LR stuff is nothing special in that regard.
