Default Steering adjustment question

I can move the wheel to the right or left about 7 degrees each way without any movement from the arm off the steering box (Pitman arm?) Everything is tight going into the box and there isn't any play in the arm. If I put my hand on the box I can hear and feel a slight knock/thunk right before the arm starts to move. Will the adjustment screw remedy this or does it just remedy play in the arm? Also seems odd to me, given the symptoms, that there isn't play in the arm. Thoughts?

Thanks,
-T-

Just about normal. Depending on how many miles on your truck, you might be able to have a mechanic adjust the steering box.

Sorry, 50K and are you talking about the adjustment screw? If that doesn't help is there any reason I couldn't just rebuild the steering box or are the components not available.

Yeah, I haven't been able to find a rebuild kit anywhere, I was hoping someone had some super secret source or something.

It would probally be just as cost effective to just replace it with a used one. I would try adjusting it first though.

Is your truck tracking while going down the road?
A little free play is normal and no there are no rebuild kits available.

Not really, it def requires a lot of steering input. Not near the point of being dangerous but well beyond the point of being annoying. The dealer keeps saying "normal" too but I've never had a disco this sloppy including one I put near 130K on. Not expecting a sports-car, just to be able to point it straight and keep it there. I'm going to go put it in the air and dig a little deeper now.

All it took was about 1/4 to 1/3 of a turn and all is right as rain. About 1/3" to 1/2" of play still in the wheel, no binding and I am a happy camper. The fact that there wasn't any free play in the pitman arm is what had me wondering if adjusting was going to help but it did.

Thanks All, much appreciated!
