I noticed today that my steering gear box had begun to leak. I have 106k on the clock. Can you replace the seals or is it better to by one from Rover Parts ($225) and just replace it. I didn't see any post in archive discussing replacing it. Do you need any special tools to remove and replace?

 

No need to replace it.
First verify that it is your steering box and not a bad hose clamp.
If it is a hose clamp (99% of the time) replace the clamp.
If it is the steering box buy a quart ofDexronn IIIwith stop leak and when the P/S fluid is low add that, it will stop the leak and save you $220.
Just make sure that you do not add more than have a quart of the stop leak.

 

What is the 11mm nut on the top of the steering box? It looks oily around it. I checked the hose clamps and hoses, they are not leaking. It looks like the seal on the shaft coming out of the bottom is leaking.

The stop leak stuff will hopefully swell the seals therby "stopping" your leaks..
Iam about to flush mine and plan to use some Lucas product it doesnt leak badly, but there
is evidence of it leaking.. Its a bit oily all around..

 

That helps a bunch, thanks. Diagrams are great. The bleed screw was loose. I will try the stop leak too. Clean it uo good and see if it still leaks.

 

If the leak persists, consider replacing the lines cause it is very common for them to fail with this sort of age, as well as whatever else is leaking.
The addition of a stop leak product is not advised on Rover pumps that are a little too sensitive anyway. Some may tell you to use the Lucas p/s additive thinking it will stop all exterior leak when in fact it is designed more to free up your internal valving and firm up the interior seals which will cause a loss of flow.

 

I dont think Lucas makes a ATF stop leak, and that is the kind that you will need as DI's use Dexron for power steering fluid.
