Default Steering gearbox leak

Well i just got my first Land Rover it's a '97 Discovery XD i'm a Jeep guy that just crossed into the world of land rovers. Well first my power steering box is leaking out of the top, should i look for a reman. or overhaul it with a seal kit? Has anyone overhauled one of these, i'm thinking it may be more of a headache. Second the previous owned bypassed the heater core with hose, i'm guessing the core was leaking i'm going to hook it back up to see i don't see signs of signs of previous leaks inside the cabin is this a common part failure? well thats about it does anyone know any specific's about the XD i don't know to much except there was 250 made. Thanks

Andrew

The steering box is a VERY common leak. I also have a '97, I removed the return line from the reseivor and stuck it into a gallon jug, have a friend start the trk while you stand in front with a quart of Dexron, idle the trk and keep the reseivor full until the fluid comes out clean into the jug.You may need two jugs.
Once the fluid comes out clean re-attach the hose and fill the reseivor, when it is low top off with a ATF stop leak. These guys like Lucas, I used Valvoline.
I just topped off with stop leak until it stopped leaking, you do not want to use more than 1/2 bottle of stop leak though, it will clog your pump.
As far as info on the XD, the only thing that I can tell you is that all D1's are the same, just different trim levels.

hmm.. mines leaking pretty good I would rather fix with a new seal or box it's not a seep by any means more of a steadyflow fromaround thesquare that bolts on top of the box with the adj. in the middle. But if stop leak will fix a pretty good leak i wouldn't mind saving the money for sure.

I don't think there is a seal kit available, lots of good guaranteed used boxes out there though. When working on the p/s, order and replace the 3 hoses and get it over with, they can also be a major leak.
Yes the heater cores can leak, not real common but they can.

leaking from the lower shaft seal? where the drop arm is?
replacing the seal will not cure this leak due to
internal movement of the shaft. suggest replacement with
used unit or rebuilt unit.
the xd comes with xtras like a front skid plate, blacked out wheels,
blacked out hood, raparound brushbars, rear lamp guards ect.
you got a good one!! hope you like yellow. easy to find in the parking lot.

My 97 also leaks on the top (where the four bolts are the crack between the top and the bottom part, I learned my lesson about filling up the whole thing with lucas.. my Power Steering pump O ring on the high pressure went bye bye) So now I just fill it up with PS fluid until I have the money to buy a new power steering gear box and new powersteering hoses i think roverparts.com has the box at 400 and the hose set at 112 i think.

Get in there with a pressure washer to make sure and pinpoint your leak. The factory hose clamps on the low pressure side loosen with time. Clip them off and replace with worm clamps. You can get new seal kits, but find your leak first, before you start replacing stuff.

All of those with D1's DO NOT PUT LUCAS POWER STEERING ADDITIVE INTO YOUR RESERVOIR. Use the ATF treatment.

OH crap thanks for the tips I just bought a bottle of lucas and was about to dump it in haha, guess i won't do that. So can I use a regular P/S stop leak like the valvoline? Or does it have to be a trans. treatment?

I used the Slick 50 transmission fluid treatment in mine until
I got around to changing the hoses out.
The Slick 50 stuff is for high mileage trans it worked in the power steering.

Your power steering system take ATF as fluid. I would only use ATF compatible fluids. PS fluid is thicker, and if it leaking now, it will leak more after a cold start up.
