Steering box itself is hydraulic.
It has o-rings and nylon rings inside.
If any have blown, it can cause your problem.

You did yours recently, right? I'm just wondering how much disassembly required to get in there. Where you got the parts? Thanks

Hi LR03NJ, just some suggestions;

Try disconnecting the steering damper as that may impede the steering.
Failing that, jack the truck up at the front onto axle stands and check the drag and track control links also the top and bottom knuckle joints both sides.
If the fluid in the steering system is old you can try replenishing it and bleeding the system at the steering box.
After this it will become evident or not whether the steering box or pump is defective, but I hope not.

I think he was referring to rebuilding the steering box

Yes, I did, and after some issues with it, I bought a remanufactured box, and wish I had to start with.
I'm all for rebuilding, and I'll tackle any job. I've rebuilt steering boxes before too, but this is one I would pass on.
There is a large spring clip on the outside, comes off easy in theory...not so much in reality.
There are 3 nylon rings on the inner rack. The rack installs easily. Even so, it cut a small chunk out of one of the nylon rings like a razor blade.
The rings are only available in the $110 kit.
The reman box was $273 after the core and has a 1 yr warranty. I would love to save $150+, but in this case, I gladly spent it...after wasting the rebuild kit.
I took lots of pics. I'll post them later, as the service is bad where I am right now.

If anyone disagrees with me, please, by all means, share your box rebuilding secrets. Everything Disco2 is easy to work on. The design of the box, not so much.

And, the box does come in and out easy.
Draglink, steering shaft coupling, lines, 4 bolts on frame.
In or out in 15 minutes.
The first reman box I got leaked (imagine that), box itself, and they gave me another...so I got good at taking them in and out.
Steering also aligns easily.

Lucky8 has the rebuild kit. Quality, like everything they sell. No complaints with the parts themselves.

I got the reman box from BuyAutoParts.com in California
