Yea do some pics. I'm gonna see what I can find junkyard wise around my neck of the woods. It probably would be easier doing it with the leather removed so you can get some tight hitches on there. The only thing would be working where it goes to the larger section. Maybe do those pieces first and then leave a little excess where you can start the knots and cover the excess piece on the back. Maybe start at the 9 o'clock position and finish there that was you can hide the final knot. What type of knots where you thinking of using?

Not sure on the knots. The 04 I had for a week or so had it just wrapped tightly around the wheel and then he tucked under the end. Without using a knot it didn't stick up as much. I'll just have to experiment and see what works the best. If I get all fancy I'd do a black border to tie in with the black leather, then whatever color I want with a Rally Car/Ford Raptor Red Center just for kicks.

I just gotta practice as I haven't messed with that stuff since my Jeep Days lol.

This shows how little I know about it- I thought you would just literally loop it around....

And I think I want to give this a go. The door handles as well might be cool. Not that I want to go all nuts with trying to be tacticool, but as this is not a limo and is more or less the family truck, it might be worthwhile. I want to keep the truck nice, but utility is never a bad idea.

If done in black I don't think it would look gross at all. Actually an update to an interior that dates back to 94.

I've seen 60K JKU's with paracord everywhere. Now they used like lime green or pink paracord for it to stand out, but if it would have been done in a normal color it compliments an interior quite well IMHO.

If a Jeep owner got a hold of a LR I could see the grab handles on the front seats done, door handles, grab handles by each door, rear door handle (SE7), steering wheel, probably a custom knit e-brake boot and shifter boot, just to name the ones that come to mind lol.

Our D1/D2 Steering wheels look nice when the color matching interior leather is in mint condition, but it looks like pure crap when it's cracked, blackened, or falling apart and the paracord would be a custom conversation piece that would last longer and look much better.

Exactly. We've got a JKUR and I've seen the larrys hat put on neon Easter egg para dimwittedness all over the place. Honestly, a wannabe tactical version of bling as the function was lost after the initial purchase. Suffice it to say, there is none of that nonsense on ours. Yes, I carry a good bit of it, but it's all coiled and not adorning the interior like Saturday Night Fever.

In any event, doing the steering wheel and maybe the door pulls doesn't seem too over the top and would be a seriously economical way to freshen things up. I mean you can get 100 feet for like $2. So even if it does look like crap, it's not money wasted and I'll use it until I feel ok with spending $300+ to have it done correctly.

I looked up several videos on youtube and saw a few done in just pure black and they stop/started at the line in the steering wheel (where our different colors stop/start for example) and they looked factory. Then some of the video's were done totally redneck and looked the part.

Our LR's while more upscale vs say a Jeep are still Camel Trophy/Military based some to me some tasteful paracord done in the fish scale or the one I'm liking which is uses on axe handles would be a nice touch to the steel bumpers, lift, roof rack, winch, and M/T's lol.

Just make sure to pull it as tight as possible using some needle nose pliers (90% of those videos DID NOT do that & it left it looking a bit bulky). But the videos with axe handles or using it on boats looked sick when pulled tightly and then properly tucked/melted the ends.

I haven't really messed with it since my last tour in Iraq and that was in 05'. I was thinking of actually removing the leather completely from the wheel and going all black since it would hide the dirt a little better and I think removing the leather will help make it not as bulky but if I did leave the leather on, I would actually remove the inner strand from the paracord to make it lay smooth on top. We used to do that when we would make watch bands and some gun slings so it wasn't as bulky and it could actually lay flat. I'm ready to see one done now. Got me looking for paracord as we speak.

HA! I've already added a few hundred feet to the Amazon shopping cart.

But you are getting all cerebral on me for this. I'm actually just thinking of doing it over the leather with the full monty as I'm a knuckle dragger, so the thicker the wheel the better. I'm pretty sure that will necessitate me doing the whole wheel, but what the hell- again, it's not like I'm wasting money as the stuff can be reused. Also, per that video I posted, it will be possible to get it all off in seconds, unlike a lot of the patterns that will make it harder to remove.

Ok so you are doing like a cobra/survival weave then? Nice! Post the pics when you are done. I'm probably gonna go to pull a part in the next week or so and get one do it with the flat way on the leather and if I don't like that, I'll take the leather off and do it with the paracord with the inner strands left in. I'll probably do something like a sailors slip hitch. We always had them on the boats I was on going down the railing covered with lacquer to seal it but I won't go that far.

Did the upper part of the wheel tonight. Honestly, I'd say it's worth a shot as it looks darn acceptable for my first try. If it were a brand new $100k RR, eh, not so much. But a cheap and fun old rig like this? Heck yes!

If I took my time I could make it look a lot better, but this was in a few minutes while the kids were in the bath. If you're cheap, and want something functional, I'd definitely go this route. No way I'm going to look for a new wheel now.
