Default Still Overheating

I have a 2003 Discovery II with 112,000 miles that I bought less than a year ago.

I had overheating issues from the start and have replaced almost the entire Cooling System.

I have an ultraguage and right now I am running at a pretty constant 220 degrees.

Here is what I have replaced so far...
  • thermostat
  • radiator
  • water pump
  • radiator hoses
  • head gasket seals

I replaced the thermostat, radiator and water pump myself and that brought the temp down from 230s and 240s to a cool 205.

But I was still leaking coolant all the time so I had a shop replace the head gasket seals...which was $2000 to bring my temp back up to 220.

I dont know what else I could do, replace, or repair to get to a cooler temperature.

any suggestions??

UPDATE - ISSUE RESOLVED

I replaced the thermostat and expansion tank coolant cap and now am seeing temps around 194 degrees and I haven't seen temps above 200 degrees yet.

The whole change only took about hour and cost me $80 including the coolant.

Here are the parts I used.
  • Motorad 439-180 Thermostat
  • URO Parts PCD000070 Expansion Tank Cap

I'd put a new cap on the coolant tank to be safe. Besides that did you go with 180 soft spring thermostat or stock thermostat?

Go with the grey 180 degree thermostat. I'm not sure who had them but I'm sure someone on here can tell ya.

Like dusty mentioned though you could have a clogged up heater core. On the top passenger side firewall you'll see two hoses running into it. Those are to your heater core. I would pull those and try to flush it out if the new thermo doesn't help.

Just to give everyone an update I replaced the thermostat and the coolant cap that seemed to work.

I was seeing about 220 all the time and now I am seeing a cool 194 and so far it haven't seen it above 200.

Here is the thermostat and coolant cap I used.

Motorad 439-180 Thermostat
URO Parts PCD000070 Expansion Tank Cap

I would put in the standard Land Rover replacement 180 degree thermostat.
Not the Motorad. LR thermostat is about $70 or so. Yes a rip off but..
