Strange lights on after head gasket job?
Ok- a friend of mine owns a shop and just finished helping me out by doing a head gasket job on my 2001 D2 - redone heads, new gasket set, head bolts, wires, plugs, thermostat. All is done now, he says the truck runs great (picking it up today) and NO check engine lights, ABS, etc. BUT, the TC light is on, and the "D" (for drive) flashes on the dash while driving. He also said the M/S (mud/snow?) light is on or flashes as well (maybe hit hit the "mode" switch on the console - not sure yet). That said, I've had no issues with any dash lights before this....any thoughts? Thanks -
Sounds like a low voltage situation, charge the battery and make sure the alternator and all grounds are connected properly. The TC light sounds like the 1 of the 3 amigos is there, don't worry the rest will come sooner or later.
Why would the TC light come on just on a whim? I have had no issues / no lights at all....just seems a little coincidental that we do a head gasket job and then it's on when we reconnect the battery?
Like I said he needs to charge the battery and check the ground connections and make sure the alternator is hooked up properly. Have you not heard of the three amigos? The only time the ETC warning lamp is illuminated is if traction at a wheel is lost or if there is a problem with the traction control. The ETC is tied to the ABS and HDC so usually all 3 illuminate. Maybe he pulled an ABS sensor plug or something. If you had a rover specific scanner the computer would tell you the fault.
The M/S - mud/snow
- lights normally come on when you have low voltage, either your battery is crapping out or the alternator. Check that all the battery and alternator cables are on properly and tightened. Have the battery and alt tested.

M/S stands for Gearbox Manual/Sport Mode. I call it the (even more) gas guzzler button. Maybe he hit the button while dicking around the inside of the truck. Flashing though means a low voltage condition. It happens all the time when you work on a truck, leave the battery unhooked and it will discharge and be low when you hook it back up.

Well, it turns out I had a loose/dirty throttle position sensor, which was causing CE light as well as high idle. Then I put a new battery in and the other 4 lights (flashing M/S, D, Hill Descent, TC) went away. New heads/gaskets/bolts/Magnecore wires/Bosch Platinums all complete and she is driving better than ever!
Next up in a couple days, trans filter/fluid change, new power steering hose, 4 roof rack mounted PIAA's and she's ready for another 60K before I start pulling heads over again!
Thanks -
