Default Strange vibration at slower speeds

Howdy Folks,

Let me start by saying that the front drive shaft has already been removed. I'm driving an 01' Disco. I broke a u-joint, luckily not destroying my tranny. I locked my transfer case via CDL nipple so I could still get to school, but I am getting a strange vibration only at slower speeds; between 5 and 35. Once I get up to speed the vibration disappears. Tires are balanced. The rear drive shaft was my next step but I didn't wanna tear it out and replace the u-joints if someone can offer me another explanation. Thank you.

Best,
Nic

Have tires rebalanced (pretty cheap). Look at flex coupler if so equipped (rear of remaining shaft).

How many miles on the truck, how often do you grease your u-joints, front and rear? Have you inspected the rotoflex for vertical cracks between the 6 bolts?

You will want to inspect roto flex for cracking as the tend to do this with age. It is where the rear drive shaft bolts to the rear differential.

I gave the rear rotoflex a peak and it has developed micro cracks between the bolts. I'll replace that today; hopefully that resolves the issue. Thanks everybody!

Disco Mike,

It has 136.3k on it, and I try to grease the u-joints once or twice a year. Do you recommend more? Thanks.

p.s. thanks for you help over the years

You should grease them every 3k

From the propshaft rebuild thread.

Maintenance

When you grease it(which you must do after rebuilding it), you need to see new grease come from around all 4 seals on each u-joint. And that's the case every time you lube it.
The service interval for normal use is every 5k miles or 3 months, whichever comes first.
I use Castrol Pyroplex Blue NGLI#2 as it's made for off-road use and is formulated to get tackier when wet. But any grease is better than no grease so don't put off service because you can't find the perfect grease someone told you is the be-all and end-all of grease.

Did you have the vibration before removing the front propshaft?

Yup, it's a pretty rough vibration. Side to side, hardest at 30mph.
