Default Strong fuel smell (Solved)

Hey all. Lately I’ve been getting a really strong fuel smell during and after driving. I replaced my fuel cap because the gasket was seriously corroded. That seemed to help a little, but not entirely. Every once in a while I’ll get the 0305 code, but not often. And with the windows up, I can’t smell it.

Any ideas what to check? It’s seriously strong, almost like straight fuel is leaking somewhere. But my mileage hasn’t gone down for that to be it I don’t think.

I have the same issue and I'm beginning to suspect it's where the fuel line attaches to the fuel rail. I guess this piece is plastic and seems to be a common point of failure. The problem is it's under or behind the intake, not an in easy place to see/inspect.

Well I found the cause.... I’m not sure how this is possible, but fuel is coming out the top of the fuel pump when it’s running. I’m assuming the pump has a crack in that area that’s letting fuel pump out.

Before running, after I cleaned up what I suspected was fuel mixed with crud.

About 15 seconds after starting the truck.

Yep it's aged and probably cracked. I know for sure the ethanol in the fuel certainly doesn't help the internal wiring of the fuel pump. I've pulled several with almost 90% bare wires inside due to the ethanol in the fuel. You should be able to get a fuel pump for around 150-175.00 for a Non SAI fuel pump.

Thanks, Best. I’ve pulled this one before to check the condition of everything but obviously didn’t notice the cracking.

I went ahead and ordered a Bosch unit from RockAuto for ~$180 shipped with tax. It should be here this week so I can get back on the road.
