When you turn the truck on...before you start it... is the check engine light supposed to stay on? or does it normally turn off after a few seconds?

Here's why I ask:

I started the truck today after it has been sitting for a while. Started right up. Drove down the driveway and let it idle for like 5 mins. Turned her off to move cars around. Went to start her back up to put gas in her... and she wont start. She turns over but wont start. So I'm wondering if i threw a code and need to reset it. Or if I'm looking at a bigger issue. Just seems weird to me that she started up no problem after sitting for 4 months...only to not start 10 mns later.

Any thoughts?

 

First of all, resetting a code won't fix anything.
How much STALE gas is in the tank??

 

1/2 of a tank or so. Although I did put stabil in it before it sat.

The truck did start right up at first..and ran for a good 5 minutes.

She turns over but just wont catch.

Should I fill her up with new gas?

 

I dont think that the gas is the issue.
Do you have spark?

 

I'll check tomorrow. Too cold and dark to check right now.

Any thoughts on what would kill spark totally when it worked just fine 5 minutes before?

 

No I do not have a idea, other than the crank sensor.
But we need to start with the simple things first.
Check for spark then check for fuel.
It could be that you have water in the gas tank, you never want to store a car with anything less than a full tank of gas, otherwise condensation will collect inside the gas tank. If that is the case then it would have quit even with the engine running.
Depending on where you live if there is water in the tank it could have frozen in the fuel lines. If that is thecase then you will need to get the truck inside a warm garage and give it 24 hours or so to thaw.

 

I'll get some de-icer. I'll check for fuel and spark in the morning. A warm garage isn't gonna happen unless I get it started. So I'll just pray for warm weather

De-icer wont help. All that is is alcohol and what that does is absourb the water so it can be carried into the combustion chambers to be burnt.
If you have a little bit of water,then yes it will help AFTER you get the truck running, if you have alot of water then no, it wont help.
And if it is already frozen in the fuel line it wont melt the ice.
Assuming that the fuel lin is frozen you can use a hair dryer on the fuel lines to thaw them out.

 

So it must have been ice in the lines. Today is warmer and she started right up. I took her straight to the gas station and filled up. Drove her for about 30 mins. If she starts tonight I'll run her to work which is 55 miles each way. Thanks for the help folks.

 

Now that you have the truck running and a full tank of fuel add a bottle of HEET or other fuel line antifreeze to get rid of any water that might still be in the system waiting to freeze next time it gets cold
