Haven't driven my 2004 Disco SE7 in a while. Yesterday is started if and immediately the back sun roof opened without me pushing any buttons.
Question one: any ideas what's going on?. I noticed the ceiling liner looks damp in a back corner, short in a switch perhaps?
Question two: how do I close the sunroof mechanically without breaking something? I tried manually turning the rear motor with an Allan wrench, it won't budge.

 

The Sunroof ECU can get wet and ground/short out and yep usually the rear sunroof is the one that will open up. I would unplug the Sunroof ECU or the rear sunroof motor, and then try to crank it closed. You're probably fighting the electric motor.

 

Thanks! Great idea, that makes sense. Hope the motor is still ok if it's been pushing the roof open all day :-( I'll have to try it later tonight.

 

The motor has an internal switch so once it's in the OPEN position it shouldn't keep running. However if still plugged in and the ECU is energized the second you try to rotate it the motor will kick in. The ECU is above the front 2 switches. Tan little box with a mounting tab. You can remove it and try to dry it out as well. Replacements online like Ebay are cheap normally 25-35.00 and 94-04 = same sunroof ECU on a D1/D2.

 

Since it was raining, I thought the quickest would be to pull the fuse and try to crank the sunroof closed, wouldn't budge. The front sunroof was crank-able though, so that was weird, perhaps I just didn't have enough torque.
Anyway, I took a peek at the ECU and wiggled some cables, everything looked good. Then I disconnected all switches and plugged them back in again, and lo and behold, everything worked as expected when put back together again.
So in the end, perhaps it was just a bad connection somewhere that was aggravated due to the moisture?
Thanks for the help everyone, now I feel emboldened and might rethink my idea of selling my 2004 Disco II SE7. I've got a power window I should look at fixing, as well as something that puts it in limp mode with a P0705, so stay tuned for another post :-)
