I don't want to get in to the politics of it all, because that's the kind of crap I use my Disco to get away from, but when I hopped in for my weekly drive this morning I did wonder if my time would be better spent siphoning the gas back out and selling it on the black market.

Maybe to swing this back around to the original question, at least how I interpreted it...How can we keep the operating costs/TCO down on our Disco?
One thing that came to my mind was LPG, which Best4X4 mentioned earlier. Lots harder to get a modern ECU controlled EFI engine to play nice with LPG than a carb engine, but not impossible I don't think.
Another was E85. Not buying it at the pump as it is likely to follow gas in pump price, but I can set up a still as easy as the next guy. If I am only buying 15% of a gallon of fuel in pump gas, and adding the rest from moon-shine (with the appropriate permits of course - TTB F 5110.74) then I can cut my cost per gallon to probably about $1.00 a gallon after accounting for the cost of operating the still. Maybe less.
This was discussed here back in 2012 when gas prices were last in this neighborhood nationally. At the time it was questioned if the juice was worth the squeeze. I think it is still dicey.
But, has anyone put together a comprehensive list of what it would take to make a disco E85 compatible. Fuel lines, seals, pump, filter sock, and injection control come to mind initially. Ideally injection control would come from a re-mapped ECU, but I think there are inline options, just not as efficient.

I have never tried but ethanol has about 30% less energy per gallon than straight gasoline. I have seen controllers that connect in between the injectors and the ECU that keep the injectors open longer to add more fuel per cylinder. Then you would need a sensor in the fuel line to detect what percentage of ethanol is in the fuel to adjust properly as you probably won’t be able to fill up with E85 all the time. No idea on the pay pack for this but I would imagine that gas would have to stay very high for a few years to make this worthwhile.
