Yea check the front drive shaft if is shot it maybe binding up and it will clunk hard.
I replaced the front drive shaft shortly after I bought it about a year ago so its basically brand new, it has grease fittings and it was greased before installation. I took a look at it just to be sure but there was nothing obviously wrong with it. Maybe I'm wrong but I wouldn't expect something like that to prevent the transmission from engaging into drive either.
@jethron Well if the drive shaft is good, I have one big one revving to get motion is most likely the transmission, I would think torque convertor but I have never heard of one fail with a big clunk/clang

Yeah thats maybe what I'm starting to think as well. Would like to hear what some others think before drawing any conclusions.
The clunk sound may have been a coincidence since something was already clunking before this happened. Unfortunately I wasn't there when it happened, and I'm not sure how much I trust the place I took it to.
I was just out in the driveway doing some testing and I'm actually able to get it moving without revving it up first. Not sure if its normal or not but the shifter won't actually go all the way down to 1, it stays put near the bottom of the range but the light indicator doesn't turn on. But once it's down there it starts moving forward.
Tach read over 4k rpm so very strong indication of clutch slipping. I haven't touched the transmission since I've had it, going to do a full service on it when the parts come from atlantic british. Thinking it just may be low fluid/clogged filter causing low pressure.
