That is why I say just stick the end of your grease gun in the hole, pump the handle 20 times per side every 6 months and call it good.

 

does anybody have a visual instruction on how to properly grease the swivel ball? I've read in other forums that you have to drain the oil and then apply the grease. I have a 97 disco.

 

i assume if the swivel has been filled with grease it shouldn't leak. I'm asking cause the guy i bought the trucck from said he had them "rebuilt" and filled with grease and a little oil to softnen the grease but they seem to be pretty greasy on the ball, i wonder if they didn't replace the seal or if he's just full of it. if it is a bad seal how big of a job is it to replace them?

 

It depends on what you're lubing and the design of the seals. For some things you can over pressurize and mess up the seals.

That is not the case with u-joints. I see all the time people one the internet saying don't use too much or you'll blow the seals. That's people speaking out of ignorance. U-joints are specifically designed so you have new clean grease coming from all 4 seals. You can in fact pop the seals off of their seats, but that's no harm, just take your finger and push them back on.

It's personal choice whether to use gear lube or grease in your swivel *****. The only reason L/R changed the spec was because if your swivel ***** get pitted the oil will seep out and people complained about the leaks. If your seals and swivel ***** are in good shape, oil is no problem. The advantage of gear lube is it's a lot easier to change if your Rover has the drain plugs.

I would not add any oil to Rovers new grease, if they ment for it to be added they would have mentioned it in the directions.

 

I use the same lithium grease in my swivel that I use in my ujoints.and the greasable tierod ball joints that I just replaced..... The biggest difference that Ive experienced in the suspension work that I have done is a good alignment....But the HD Super Gaz from what Ive been doing is a good deal...

 

Some 97's may have a drain, but most, like mine, do not. Just top it off. I use a mix of grease and 85-140. I just thin the grease out enough to flow. I have bought a tube of the Rover stuff, and it is about the same consistency.
