Question Taking a chance?

I think I'm going to pick up a 2003 Disco tomorrow (5 passenger). The oil pump went when he was pulling in a parking lot. I know its a common problem with the 03s. Body is very good and underside is one of the cleanest I've seen. I'm really hoping I can get away with just replacing the pump but I know it may have toasted the engine. Also looks like the valve cover gaskets are leaking a bit. Head gaskets were replaced last year and brake pads and rotors were recently replaced. Interior looks rather clean with no tears or drooping headliner.

I'll have it trailered to my mechanic (I don't have time to do it myself) to see what he can do. If we can get away with just replacing the pump, great. If it needs an engine, I'll bite the bullet and put in a used motor.

The seller will take $1100 for it. Anyone have any thoughts?

I also have a 98 Disco SE7 that I bought a year ago for the kid to use at college in winter (I gave her my Rx-8 when she turned 16 and its definitely not a winter car ). Paid $1100 for that one too. Needed a fuel pump. Put one in and no other issues. Found the floor has a couple of rust holes through in the driver's foot area due to a leaking sunroof. I'm hoping I can get some patch panels welded in place and I'll last another winter.

Replace the oil pump.
See how it goes.

You'll need to do head gasket soon enough.
Never overheat it.

You got it almost for free so..

Yeah, thats what I'm figuring. At $1100, its almost impossible to lose. When I asked him why is he selling and not repairing it. He said he has another Disco with 7 seats which suits him better plus he has quite a few other cars. Seemed like a straight shooter (there was a Really Nice Alfa convertable in the garage/barn he owns).

Heck for $1100, why not.

Head gaskets were replaced about a year ago so fingers crossed .......

Thanks for the reply.
