I’ve spent less $$$$$ on all my LR’s vs all the Nissans, Jeeps, and Hummers I’ve owned. I made a good amount of extra $$$$$ when I sold the H3 Alpha for 16.1k and turned around and bought an 06 LR3 HSE with 90k on it for 10k. Jeeps really do mean “Just empty every pocket”, and I spent WAY to much on something that was just a few years old with less than 50k on them.....

LR’s do not empty your wallet or cause you to “live in a van down by the river”. You just have to keep them well maintained, and get a good one in the first place! So many used ones out there have been treated to the zip tie/duct tape repair routine and it’s not the LR’s fault. I’ve bought several diamonds in the rough LR wise that with proper repairs I’ve been able to turn them around from heading to the scrap yard to driving everday & enjoying them (my recent 500.00 03 D2 purchase is a prime example).

Being mechanically inclined does help for diagnosing and trouble shooting, and no mechanic should be without the proper tools or scantool no matter what you drive. I haven’t been to a dealership since I sold my Jeeps.....

AC & a window problem was nothing. The LR3 is my wife’s D/D, and it’s nice, but it has way to much electronics for my personal taste. An LR4 makes an LR3 look even easier lol.

As a serious off road vehicle that I’d take miles & miles from nowhere the LR3 would NOT be my #1 choice, it’s way to depenant on battery power and computers. Alternator goes out, (mounted in a very poor location easily damaged by mud/water), it’s a ticking timebomb till the voltage drops and leaves you with nothing, a computer like the poorly located TCM gets wet or dies, and once again it’s not going anywhere..

I’ve learned with the LR3 that a good LR specific code reader is a MUST!! If I had to choose on the spot which LR I could have vs a D2 or LR3 I’d take the D2 in a heartbeat!! Very easy to work on, parts come off/go on easy, and there are a ton of aftermarket fixes since they rolled off the line to make them extremely reliable. Only issue I see with our D2’s as they get older is delicate external plastic trim pieces. Spare parts from D2’s up north can fix that though!

LR3 for me is a very safe SUV for my family, but a serious off roader nah not unless the air suspension is converted to coils, or I pull a small trailer with a lot of $$$$ spare parts.
