I have read other LR dealers spraying the block with water. Is it recommended, probably not.

So if your running at temp, lets say 195 and it is 100 degrees outside and you hit a large water puddle. Will the bottom of the block crack? I believe the blocks are thick enough aluminum that they will not crack under the water stress. Thinner aluminum I believe would.

I'm guilty of going to the car wash and washing out my engine bay while motor is still hot. Good idea? probably not. have I ever cracked my block, nope.

Just my 2cents.

I Believe the only way I'm going fix the ticking noise my D2 has at 205,000 miles is to stand back and throw $100 bills at it. Any guess how many it will take? I'm going to start with hosing it down as a 2nd option.

A ticking noise means the engine is still running.

Drive on, brave Disco.

Check your purge valve, mine ticks at idle sometimes and mimics valve tick but like you describe the frequency varies. Its a dorman, the oe one did not tick. Its surprisingly loud, and its close to the driver's side valve cover.

My 2004 Rover was taping LOUDLY when at operating temp. After a while I couldn't get it to run with out over heating. Tried everything. New cooling system the works.

Solution was a new rebuilt engine.

Ticking is now GONE and she runs like new.

With these 2003's and 04's the engine just isn't that great.

Default Had Issue with cylinder shape

My engine taps, and had been diagnosed as a slipped liner. I sourced a rebuilt 4.0 to replace my 4.6 just in case. Just had my gaskets done, and no cross contamination of fluids or slippage. The shop, run by a former service manager, and staffed by trained techs, said Land Rover acknowledges that in these late engines the cylinders were sometimes oblong. Mine measured .004" difference across. Also could be caused by piston wrist pins (have heard this from a couple of shops).

Best,
Hunter

Can someone post the link on how to repair a loose liner? I tried the thermostat change as well and it worked for about 3000 miles. Tick came back so I am assuming its a loose liner based off the description from the posts here. I'd rather tackle the problem instead of changing part after part out.

You can pin them, in the proper position
Or you can replace them with top hat liners

I had the same problem. My liners started moving at 180 degrees so the 180 thermostat wouldn't work for me.

I did the inline thermostat mod and put a 160 thermostat in it. Now the engine doesn't get so hot to allow the liners to move.

I had to do some electronic trickery to fool the ecu, but nothing major.

Been driving like that for almost a year now. No problems. No decline in gas mileage or power. Spark plugs look good as well as the oil.

Had some people think it was stupid to do but obviously I didn't. So far it beats pinning the liners or installing top hat liners. Might have to one day, who knows. Just my .02.

I can post more details and pics if you want.

Thanks!
