tapping noise - not slipped liner?
My engine taps, and had been diagnosed as a slipped liner. I sourced a rebuilt 4.0 to replace my 4.6 just in case. Just had my gaskets done, and no cross contamination of fluids or slippage. The shop, run by a former service manager, and staffed by trained techs, said Land Rover acknowledges that in these late engines the cylinders were sometimes oblong. Mine measured .004" difference across. Also could be caused by piston wrist pins (have heard this from a couple of shops).

A 4.6 pulled from a 2000 HSE discovery is going to be a lot better than one pulled from a 03 or 04.
As these engines that ran in production 03 and 04, suffered from machining defects and loosening tolerances. In fact by the end of the model run in late 04 they were just crap. You were lucky to get 60K out of them before you needed a head gasket or new engine.
Bad part is, Land Rover knew this and kept producing them any way.
It's a shame to put a 4.0 in a 04 Disco.
Do what I did and source a older 4.6. Rebuild it and throw it in. It's the cheapest option. May not be 100% the best but I couldn't beat the price.
They make an older Rover 4.6 V8.

Just a couple corrections to your post. The early Discovery 2 models from 1999-2000 only had SD (equivalent to S model) LE (equivalent to SE model) and the 7 seater options for both trims. The top of the line HSE trim level was not available until 2002. Furthermore from what information I can gather online the 4.6 liter V8 was not introduced into the Discovery 2 until 2003. 1999-2002 models were fitted with the 4.0. Some people claim that the 4.0 suffered less reliability issues and had better overall tooling from the factory. However Ive seen many early model D2's for sale online with under 150,000 and still having engine problems. Although I cannot figure when the 4.6 was first introduced, the P38 Range Rover HSE as far back as 1996 supposedly had the 4.6 engine. Different engine management but it could be swapped into a Discovery 2. This is an option that I would go with should my engine ever fail or I discovery in advance that my liners are bad.
I had the same problem. My liners started moving at 180 degrees so the 180 thermostat wouldn't work for me.
I did the inline thermostat mod and put a 160 thermostat in it. Now the engine doesn't get so hot to allow the liners to move.
I had to do some electronic trickery to fool the ecu, but nothing major.
Been driving like that for almost a year now. No problems. No decline in gas mileage or power. Spark plugs look good as well as the oil.
Had some people think it was stupid to do but obviously I didn't. So far it beats pinning the liners or installing top hat liners. Might have to one day, who knows. Just my .02.
I can post more details and pics if you want.
Thanks!
