Nanocom says it's getting an intermittent signal from the front-right ABS sensor. I replaced the hubs (were super crusty and needed replacing anyway) and it came with a new sensor wire. No change. Amigos all present. I replaced just the wire from a donor disco that I knew was functioning. No change. What's next? I guess the issue has to be between the WABCO unit and the ABS sensor wire?

EDIT: I should mention that after I clear the codes, the ABS light stays on alone until it's joined by the other lights a few minutes later.

 

ABS sensor faults are often found to be a problem with the connector between the ABS sensor wire and the wiring harness, rather than a problem with the sensor itself.

Best 4x4 recommends cutting out both sides of the connector and using heat shrink butt splices to do away with the factory connectors.

 

The stock connectors are terrible. I constantly rip mine out off-road...this is exactly the reminder I need to go through and extend all of mine and wire in better connectors. Should be a quick easy job.

 

OK so I cut out the two-pin connector and directly connected the wires together, problem still exists. Nanocom still reading front-right sensor output low...

These are the knowns:

1. Three amigos came on after hitting a pothole on a rainy day on the highway. Pretty hard hit. Has stayed on ever since.
2. Replaced both front wheel hubs. No change.
3. Replaced ABS sensor wire again. No change.
4. Bypassed the two-pin connector and wired the ABS sensor directly to the sensor that connects to the SLAB unit. No change.

What’s next? Also, remember that after clearing ABS codes, the two amigos (and brake light) extinguish, but the ABS light remains on.

 

Try another SLABS unit? You should be able to meter out the wiring from the SLABS to that wheel. See what OHM reading you get.

 

I’m good at a lot of things, but I have yet to figure out how to use a multimeter and do what you’re saying. I’m ashamed.

Swap the sensor left to right and see if the issue follows the sensor.

 

Interesting development today -

I removed the sensor from the hub to triple check that it’s seated properly and clean, and while in there decided to remove these shims that came with the hub (pre-installed) thinking perhaps the distance between the sensor and teeth was too great.

Anyway, put it back together and took it on a test drive. For the first time ever, the three amigos went away - sort of. Normally any troubleshooting I’ve done resulted in their return as soon as I got up to 10mph. This time I was able to drive normally around town for about 15 minutes until P1590 appeared and only the ABS, TC and red brake light appeared. But no HDC light.

The nanocom reports no ABS faults. Head scratcher.
