Default Ticking Noise as soon as Heat Gauge goes Warm.

I typed up a whole post and it somehow erased when my iPad snoozed…. So sorry if I’m straight to the point here.

This is my second time around w a 2004 Discovery II. Last one I fixed and fixed and sold only to regret it so I’m giving it another whirl…

I start this new one up and as soon as the stock temperature gauge needle moves the ticking begins and it’s loud…!!

I’m doing my searching and reading and also figured posting can’t hurt as well. So ANY info is greatly appreciated to get this ball / mission rolling.

Test oil pressure first. If it is good then you need to start reading up on pinning cylinders.

Wheres the best place to hook up an oil pressure gauge…?? I’ll get a gauge and install it permanently. Thanks Extinct. My searching old posts and reading some recommend the Extinct inline thermostat…. Is that through you…? Do you have a link / website…??

Good job not giving up on D2's. Then again “The definition of 'insanity' is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. – Albert Einstein.

I would call ticking normal. Rover on. If you dig you will find endless posts on ticking. Mine ticks, sometimes but often. Being a 04 it could be the cylinders or something else. I am leaning towards a stuck / worn lifter as that makes me feel better. I just drive it, sometimes a drive thru is embarrassing but it keeps me away from junk food.

Well being I had one already the first thing I did to my new one was the Rotella Diesel oil change, I forget off hand but I still have the 1 gallon container w some left over so I can find out the weight when I get home.

I also rembr on my last one every little thing I did to the cooling system the ticking progressively became quieter and quieter.

I use Valvoline VR1 20w-50 for summer, 30 for winter. Its a heat resistant racing oil. I like it. Although I just read due to it being high zinc its not recommended for vehicles with catalytic converters. I tried the Rotella for awhile but it seemed to thin out when hot. If I recall I get better oil pressure with the VR1. but might change due to the cat issue, although my cats are probably about done anyway at 186k.

@dswilly That cat issue is pretty much over a long time unless you are burning a lot of oil. I have a bit of clatter too nothing you can hear in the cab unless you are parked against a concrete wall, but only at idle. I run royal Purple HPS 10/40 and may have to bump to 20-50 for summer.

www.inlinethermostats.com What year? 03-05 I would use the port the oil cooler line threads in to. 00-02 I would use the next port up, or tee in to the port where the factory switch goes. Some guys like to use a screw on oil filter adapter.

I installed a pressure sensor in the port of the pressure switch and moved the pressure switch to upper port which is plugged from factory. Plug is easy to remove. Most sensors have an NPT thread, so you need an adapter to the metric thread of the port (M12x1.5 to 1/8" NPT). If you remove the alternator bracket it will be much easier to install.
