Default Ticking and Rattling, expertise requested

Picked up my first disco after years of saving and dreaming. Stock 04 Giverny Green with 98k on the clock that I drove home 700 miles last weekend. Needless to say I am thrilled.

or was thrilled until I took it to my mechanic today. He is experienced with Discos and right away he told me he believes the cylinder liner has slipped due to a ticking sound the engine is making. He said the ticking was not bad and the engine could last me 3 days or 3 years before it dies and I have to replace the engine with a new one.

However his assessment was rather quick and I’m wondering if premature after doing some internet browsing as there are apparently many other causes of ticking. Hoping some of you with more experience than myself will be kind enough to take a listen and give your opinion;

Ticking
Only occurs at idle. I can’t hear it when I rev the engine. It’s not super loud at idle but I believe I would hear it speed up if it were a cylinder sleeve? I can hear it more pronounced under the truck. On start up, it won’t tick for a minute or so and then starts. Got an UltraGauge and I’m sitting around 185 on average (170s on highway and peaked at 195 around the neighborhood) so temps seem good.

Rattling
Sounds like a buzzing or very fast metal rattle at the top of the engine near the windshield. Mechanic didn’t notice this but I did when I got home.

Here is a link to a video of the sounds.

Would very much appreciate any help. Hoping it’s not serious and something I can fix.

Take that tick/slippped liner diagnosis with a grain of salt. All of these trucks tick and I think the slipped liner thing is over represented in river forums.

Thanks for the reply Frank! I’ll definitely sleep a little easier tonight

As Frank said. Mine ticks at hot idle going on 5 years. Runs great. Get Extinct's inline stat to keep temps in check and drive it.

And the buzzing is probably the idle air control valve that sits on the top back near the firewall. I think that's normal too.

First of all, congrats on becoming a D2 owner; they are awesome trucks and please post up pics of your new ride!!!

Try not to let the mechanic get in your head; I wouldn't seriously worry about ticking unless your low oil pressure light never goes off.

The ticking going away when you rev it up could mean its a worn belt or pulleys or an exhaust leak...it could be so many different things so order a mechanics stethoscope and use it to pinpoint where the noises are originating:

@Casualfriday welcome to the forum and pushrod V8s.

All pushrod V8's tick eventually but if ticks after warm up it is usually a lifter/pushrod combo. As the oil heats the oil pressure drops,just a fact of life and as it drop if you have a lower weight oil or the engine has gone a long time between oil changes you get a tick. As you up the rpm oil pressure rise tick goes away.
My 1st question is what weight and brand of oil are you using Most Rover V8 owners run 10/30, 10/40,15/40 or 20/50 (the brits love 20/50). I prefer 10/40 myself. Lower weights 0 and 5 and below 30 are not really suitable.
The bad news sort of is that these 4000 to 5000 oil change engines, twice to 3 times a year for most people in my area.

Thanks! I've been looking at Extinct's inline thermostat as well the as the below 180 degree from lucky8. Curious about your thoughts on the one from lucky8 compared to extincts.

Thank you! Thrilled to finally have one after stalking other people's for so long. Here's a picture from the ride home (I think she's Giverny Green but I'm colorblind so it mostly looks gray to me);

Just bought a stethoscope and will be reading through those links today. Something tells me I won't be getting much work done today lol

Thanks for the response Richard! Based on my friend's recommendation and the reading I've been doing, I plan on using Shell Rotella T4 15W-40 with a mobile 1 m1-301a. Was also contemplating throwing some mystery oil or some sort of oil flush in there before I change it this weekend.

I don't mind frequent oil changes as part of the reason I got this truck was so I can learn to wrench on it as much as I can!

Pretty truck. I'd ditch the running boards though, lol. The lucky8 thermostat is for the LR designed system which is part of the problem. Extinct's setup bypasses this for a better more traditional-designed cooling system. He can provide more details or read his link above. I don't think the original cooling system is completely flawed, it just doesn't allow much margin for error if something is off or goes sort of wrong. And when that happens the temps can skyrocket very quickly.

Thanks! I'll be getting rid of them either this weekend or the next, hopefully it won't be a too much of a pain. Looks like I'm going for Extinct's then!
