it is possible off road to break a standard zerk fitting, but the are several types these days. Zerk Fittings / Grease Fittings
if your off roading you will probably want to use flush or button head fitting.
Back in the days of old you would install the zerk grease the joint and put the plug
back in, but that was before these new fangle zerks cam out.

How do you install a zerk in a TRE that doesn't have one initially?
