Default Timing belt question

Does anybody know the recommended mileage interval / schedule for replacing the timing belt on a Disco II?

Are there tell tale signs that a timing belt is going bad?

(by the way, this is a 2001, Disco II, with 153,000 miles on it)

C

it's got a chain not a belt. Some manufactures recommend replacing at 100K, but they will go 1M miles IMO.

I replaced my chain and gear set @ 180K because I had the front cover off anyway. Probably could have left it alone.

If you have a diesel then yes, you have a timing belt and it is every 60,000 miles that it needs to be changed.

Does the DI have a chain and gear as well?

are you serious? they put belts on a the TD5? Well that makes perfect sense..don't want to hear that noise chain over your diesel engine

LOL!!!

I know the 200 & 300tdi's use timing belts but am not 100% sure about the TD5.

Almost all overhead cam engines use timing belts because they are quieter and cheaper than timing chains.
I think Nissan and Mazda (some models) use timing chains, my ex wifes MPV V-6 had a chain but my friends Protoge' had a belt.

I figured he had a chain because it was listed in Miles.

Danny, you have a chain.

200 & 300tdi have a belt?? well that just kills my dreams. I guess that gives me another reason to use the benz OM617 engine for a diesel conversion one day.
