Default Need Help with Timing Belt and Related Info

Hi all. Thanks in advance for your help. I'll try to make this brief. I have a 2002 Freelander SE 2.5L V6 with about 75,000 miles. Back in January 2009 I spent more than $2,000 having a local repair shop replace the timing belt, idler pulley, tensioner, tensioner roller and related parts. In May 2009 (only five months later) I was driving on the highway at about 75mph and the timing belt broke. The diagnosis was that the tensioner pulley had failed, causing the belt to break. Suffice it to say, the motor is ruined. Too much internal damage to be worth fixing.

Here's my question: I recently learned that the local repair shop that originally replaced these parts did not have the proper tool to set the timing (apparently there is a special tool required to set timing on a land rover). So, if they installed all these parts but never set the timing, could that have caused the tensioner to fail five months after being replaced, or is that not a likely assumption?

Thanks for your help.

heres the deal, if they set the timing wrong you would know instantly. bang boom pow.

But if they replaced the timing cover tensioner then they made have screwed something up. But if they were ignorant and only replaced the serp belt pullies then they were just as ignorant.

Even at the dealer we use to replace just the belt till a timing belt tensioner bit the dust soon after we did the job. No we didn't screw up it just didn't like be detensioned. Warrantee covered the motor so it was ok. But afterwards we always put in a tensioner along with the timing belts. Anyway, good luck trying to get them to fess up.

And for the love of god why the hell did you bring the job to a shop that doesn't even service land rovers for a timing belt.

Hell even Volkswagen customers make a trip to the dealer for a new timing belt to prevent damage.

Don't **** around with a timing belt. The right tools or a new motor. That's your choice

Hey i had a similar deal with my k25, i ended up finding out from a buddy of mine that this tool was needed (cam adjumtment tool im imagining) and brought this up mith my tech. He looked at me like i was high and that pissed me off a litle bit but i saved my self an engine. Basically for future referances, belonging to a forum like this is a great way to double check things espetially when it comes to internals. Basically i had to pay for this jack*** to rent the tool and i felt dumb having brought it to him. These forums are a priceless resource against unknowledgable people under the hood of our cars (for some our livelyhood).

Default Replacement interval / schedule (Disco II)

Does anybody know the recommended mileage interval / schedule for replacing the timing belt on a Disco II?

Are there tell tale signs that a timing belt is going bad?

(by the way, this is a 2001, Disco II, with 153,000 miles on it)

C
