Tire Load Rating/Service Description for Disco?
I'm about ready to buy some General Grabber AT2s for my Disco, thanks to helpful advice here. I will probably go with the 245/75R16 AT2s, which have a 120/116S Service Description and an E load rating. I believe the are 10-ply.
Before I jump in I want to understand a little more about the load rating. I've read that 10-ply A/T tires can provide a very harsh ride and I know they are very heavy tires. Are these tires too heavy duty for a vehicle that's 75/25 street/offroad?
On the other hand, the other sizes I'm looking at in the AT2s may not have a high enough service description, or so I've been told. The 255/65R16 AT2s have a service description of 109T; the 255/70R16 AT2s have a service description of 111S. The tires on my Disco now are Grabber STs, 255/65R16, with a 109H service description.
I believe the only semi-A/T tire available with a 109H rating is the Yokohama Geolander A/T-S, which does not appear to be a very aggressive tire.
Can someone help me understand the load ratings/service descriptions and what is required/recommended for my Disco? Is everyone here who is running the AT2 running an LR E tire?
Thanks as always...

If you go with a 10 ply tire it will ride like a lumber wagon. It will beat you up and you will hate your trk.
If you look at the side of the tire it will tell you how much weight it can handle.
My Michilns are a 4 ply and have a rating of just over 1900lbs.
I think that if you go to www.tirerack.com it will have info on how to translate load ratings.
If all you are doing is normal stuff with your trk and are not going to carry tons of bricks in the back you are fine with a passenger rated tire.
Most AT's come in "LT" (light trk) and "P" (passenger) ratings. LT is more suited for farmers and commercial use. Passenger tires are for the rest of us.

Most all 245/75/16 are load range E and if you have stock springs it will ride rougher than a lesser load range tire but not as bad as most people think.
You can look at a load range D that is a 65 psi tire and will exceed whan LR needs or the load range C that is a 50psi tire that also exceeds LR needs.
The thing is you DO NOT fill the tires to max I run 32 psi in frt and 42 psi in rear in a load range E (80psi) tire and I have a ARB bumper and a Warn 9000winch up frt.
Just air up or down for the ride but never go under what LR has on the door unless you are off road, just air for the road.

Thanks, Landzu. I have OME shocks and springs and an ARB bumper/bull bar on my Disco...with that set-up, do the load range E tires make sense? I've been learning about the Disco/upgrading components bit by bit, but this is the first time I've purchased tires for the truck.
I can't find more info about the other size Grabber AT2s...do you know what the max PSI is on two SL tires I've listed above?

Thanks...I've spent a lot of time today on Tire Rack, but I actually didn't noticed the "specs" section (seperate from the "size" section) until now. Somostof the AT2 tires are 44 psi max (including the two 255 sizes I'm considering), aside from the load range E tires which are 80 psi.
So are the 44 psi tires ok for the Disco if I don't tow anything? Would they be a better choice for a mix of highway and casual (meaning no serious rock crawling) off road driving?I'm assuming they must be, since my current tires have a 44 psi max as well...
Sorry to keep pushing this...I need to make a decision tomorrow because some of the tires are being replaced by my insurance company due to my recent accident...

RE: Tire Load Rating/Service Description for Disco?
So, after too much time spent on this today, here are my two options for the General Grabber AT2:
245/75R16:load rangeE,80 max PSI, 120/116S, 48 lbs.
255/70R16: standard load, 44 max PSI, 111S, 41 lbs.
The actual size difference between these two tires is minor--now it all comes down to whether I need a heavy-duty 10-ply tire or should go with a lighter, lower PSI tire. And at this point I honestly don't know.
Any additional help would be appreciated...
