Project this weekend w/bro-in-law to:
- change spark plugs, wires, valve cover gaskets

Bought a 3/8" socket set w/extension and metric sockets from Sear's. I forgot to take a spark plug w/me.

What size socket is needed to change out the spark plug? Is there anything else that I might need other than the parts such as other tools. I already have plenty of beer.

I would go to auto zone and get a spark plug socket. I think you can get a cheap one for a couple of bucks. There are only a couple of sizes I think...

5/8" but get the spark plug socket. Makes the job a lot easier.

I think the valve covers take a 3/8 12 point socket. I got a deep socket. Might want to double check your.

Get a Universal joint for taking out the spark plugs if you dont already have one in your socket set, makes it alot easier, also, see the Plug Wire thread on the How To page, you may want to customize a screwdriver as mentioned for getting the plug wires out, although when I did it an unbent untaped screwdriver worked fine.
IMO, the 15 extra minutes it takes to take the hood off makes the Plug Wires much easier, especially getting the SAI assembly out. Just use a marker to outline the hinges before you pop it off.

another method I used to remove my hood is drill an 1/8 hole threw the hood hinges and into the hood (not threw the hood, into the hood) then you can use an awl to line it up and hold it in place while you tighten the hood.
