2. I was taught in auto shop in high school to wipe gunk out of the cylinders as best you could with a rag, and then smear a little motor oil on a paper towel and lightly wipe the insides of the bores. The shop teacher's thinking was that most of the wear of rings happens at startup when there isn't an oil film between the cylinder walls and the rings or pistons, so a light coating would help a little. He warned to do this only just before putting the head on so the oil didn't attract dust, which would act like fine grit and cause more wear.

I used a standard size(shallow) socket with built in swivel to get mine out. It's a Mac.
I think the small varience in height of different brands determines what will or won't fit in there, without hitting the firewall.
