The early 01's had it too, but its just easier to look at 99-00 than searching for 01's within the correct VIN/T-case #.

Aublec, you can buy a 2004 CDL kit from lucky 8, or search for a used one on ebay. The lucky 8 kit is pretty expensive, but its a much easier install than a used DI. (no bending...)

 

The center diff can be locked but the lever, cable and linkage pieces were not installed from the factory.

 

The center differential allows 4WD to be used on normal roads (constant 4WD) and can be locked for off-road use (part-time 4WD).

In the dirt a constant four wheel drive can be bogged with only one wheel spinning. This is why most have a central differential lock that stops the action of the center diff and makes it like a part-time four wheel drive in 4WD mode. The center diff lock should never be used on paved roads or non-slip surfaces for the reasons mentioned above.

99-2003 Disco II were manufactured with an "unlocked" center differential (why Land Rover this I dunno, its a good debate). 99-2000 (and part of the 2001s) however, can be modified to run in locked mode if you have the linkage to the xfer case, like Alex said. 2002-2003 you cannot, period (unless you want to replace most of the drive train). 2004 Land Rover put it back in, as they should have - The Jeep Grand Cherokee had a lot to do with that I am assuming.....hehe

 

Not true... it's permanent 4 wd all the time. The CDL locks the front and rear diffs together so that each diff gets 50% of the drive. So if the front wheels loose traction you still have drive through the rear wheels.

CDL can be added to any D2, you need to either get a transfer case with CDL or swap in the missing CDL parts, these can be purchased at Toddco for about $400 http://www.toddcosuspensions.com/diiilodi.html
Add the CDL shifter linkage and you are all set.

 

slone your post is misleading, I think you understand how it works but your explaination and example pretty much sucked.

 

bundu i know its an option, but thats some damn time invested/work if your doing it on your back with jack stands/blocks and hand tools like most of us here would have to....take the exhaust off...drive shaft...all that chit...no thanks...lol

I agree that there is no point in adding the cdl. if people would just take the time to understand the specifics of what they were buying before they blow a bunch of money they would save themselves a bunch of headaches. The problem with all the 4 wheel drive questions is that you can't explain a drivetrain system to people who don't understand how a diff works, or what it means to lock one.

 

I don't care what year you buy, the only way to know if the T-case has the CDL nipple is to crawl under the truck and reach up there and check yourself!
Some have been replaced with later model boxes.
