You have the wrong sized draw bar. It should be a tight fit.

It sounds to me that your pin holding the draw bar in the receiver is not fitting as tight as it should. Probably just a hair too small. That is the only reason I can think of that would cause the draw bar to move in the receiver while towing.

I also think that being an SUV you will here a fair amount of noise from the receiver while towing just from the little bit of play that allows you to insert and remove the draw bar. I am used to towing with a pickup where I hear nothing in the cab.

My pin has a sleeve that takes up the extra space and makes it a tight fit. (It is a stainless steel masterlock) Maybe you can just get the sleeve at an auto parts store.

From what he described he has the wrong sized draw bar. Mine is a tight fit, I have to wiggle mine to get it in and out. That is how it is supposed to be.

You dont need a LR draw bar, mine is by Draw Tite, they and Reese are the leaders in trailer hitches and accessories. I dont remember where I bought my draw bar, I bought it for my Montero back in 2001.
You just need the right size, it needs to be a very snug fit, it is not safe otherwise.
I have towed many thousands of miles with a SUV and there has never been any noise coming from the trailer hitch.

I have a 2" Reese in it right now that i got from wally land. it has about 3/16 in give around it. I'm really mad also because its rusting out the land rover towing package.

yeah it should be a tight fit with little clearance all around for just that reason... if the draw bar shifts too hard with the weight of a trailer behind it like under hard braking you could potentially bend that pin and it will be pretty hard to get it out... get yourself one that fits, not so tight you have to beat it in with a hammer, but tight enough to where it doesnt bounce around inside the receiver...

Here is an option. Drop the $200.00 dollarsfor the harness ant your dealership if you are pressed for time. Very easy install. Then find one of those trailer rental yards with the $25.00 a day rentals. They usually say local only, but what they don't know won't hurt them. Hope that helps.

I towed my tiburon from West Virgina to Ohio about 500 round trip and it pulled fine, I rented a tow dolley, have you thought about maybe getting an OPEN trailer and using tie downs? that would cut the weight down.
