Default towing in low range...safe?

Land Rover says the discovery towing capacity is 7,700lbs in low range. Now my question is if it's even safe to drive on the highway in low range? What is the top speed you can reach?

well I have a friend that has a very heavy duty trailer and that plus the weight of my Jeep would really be pushing if not over the 5,500 lbs towing capacity. The place we go off-roading is about 7 miles away so If I could tow in low range and reach a speed of 35mph I would be happy with that.

Go weight the trailer and then you will know. High range with a 5500# trailer is fine as long as the trailer has brakes.
You never run in low range out on the road unless you are in snow or mud and driving slowly.

The disco towis rated at 3500kgs, so 7700 Lbs, so you will be fine as long as its braked like Mike said.

U.P., what do you do with the D1? Looks like you're throwing everything at the D2 for your trip to Africa. That's where you're trip is taking you later this year right?

If you tow in low range at 35 mph you will be at about 5,000 rpm. Do you really want to run your trk at that rpm for 7 miles?

Mike, what will it damage in the transfer case if you do run on a hard dry surface in low range? I thought full time transfer cases could handle it as long as the CDL is not enguaged.

spike, I said IF I could do 35mph I would be happy. It sounds like 35mph is not possible so I will not attempt. Yes, the trailer has brakes. I wouldn't pull a vehicle on a trailer that didn't have brakes. This reminds me, who makes a good in cab brake controller for discos?
