Default Trailer wiring harness

For some reason I don't have a trailer wiring harness for my 2001 Discovery II. The ones from Land Rover cost upwards of$200 which I think is ridiculous. Is it possible to get a flat 4 connector and wire it in direct to the plug that is located behind the right tail light lens? I know which are the correct wires and it would be a simple matter to just splice it in. However I am worried that there may be some kind of a lamp sensor, or maybe it might put too much of a load on the tail light circuit and start blowing fuses or worse. Does anyone have any experience with this? The trailer that I would be towing is a very small boat. Thanks a lot! ....Bob

You have to buy a convertor to plug into your harness and then into that you can use whatever plug you want. Go to Atlantci British, I believe they have the convertors for alot less.

I own a '99 Disco II it had no trailer wiring when i first purchased it. I searched the web and found this web posting on this issue http://www.discoweb.org/trailerwire/index.htm I purchased the first wiring kit from u-haul, and it went bad in about 6 months. Went to wal-mart, and bought their product and havn't had any problems for about 1.5 yrs now. It was a lot cheaper than even the aftermarket converters for discos, and even the trailer light indicators on the dash work.

Almost forgot... I absolutely despise the trailer wiring just hanging down, swinging back and fourth. the one product from u-haul that i like is the actual plug. I don't remember the part # but it has a small mount that i screwed to the plastic bumper next to my hitch and looks like a factory install.

spend the money to have the trailer lights installed properly. the cheap u-do-it kits that splice into your existing wiring will forever give you fits!

The ONLY difference between these kits and the hoppy universal kit is that the Atlantic British kit just plugs in. Other than the plug they are identical.(probably made by same company, with rover connector on it and re-named) If it is wired and sealed upcorrectly you won't have any problems with it, but that's just the expirence i've had with the one that's been on my disco for over a year. I live in Merritt Island, FL and pull my 15' flats boat about 3 days a week going fishing after work.

I think that was the point trying to be made. For $40 moreyou can just plug it in and not worry about making good connections yourself. Worth that much to me to not had to sit back there with a soldering iron and heat shrink gun. It's too hot outside for that...

I, myself just ordered the kit from ATB for my D1 ($69) So I didn't have to do this. I had a tail light go out last month and changed all of the bulbs out. what a PITA.

Mike, I went with your recommendation and got a harness from Atlantic British. It was $106 with shipping which I didn't think was too bad compared to the dealer's price. It arrived today and was installed in minutes. Now I can go to the lake.

Thanks everyone for all the help.

Bob
