Tranny temp Light Disco 1
Well, I got off work today, it is raining badly, started the truck, and the tranny temp light was on immediately. Checked the fluid, it is fine, it does need changing, but the fluid was not hot. I sat for an hour waiting for the light to go off, it never did so I drove home. I think I have a faulty sensor, but I don't know where it is. Can anyone tell me where it is located, and other possible things to check? I called Land Rover, they said the tranny does not have a filter. Any advice is appreciated!

I thought so! The dealer near me seems pretty bad at blowing things out of proportion. I do see a sensor on a metal cooling line going into the radiator. It looks perfectly dry, but I'm going to investigate more tomorrow. Is there any other way to see if the tranny is actually overheating?

Where do you want me to stick the thermometer?? That's sounds dirty......
I could grab the stick with my hand, the fluid was a little warmer than body temp. That was after running at temp for 10 minutes when I pulled over at the auto parts place. Oh, and it doesn't just come on once you start it, it comes on when you turn the ignition to on, before it starts.

Transmissions warm up quick, you cant go by feel.
You would need to stick the temp probe into the dipstick tube and actually get it into the trans fluid, thats a long ways.
How much is the sensor?
If you think its cheap just replace it.
Otherwise you are looking at a trip to a mechanic to have the actual trans temp checked which will prob cost more than the sensor.

There's no way that the tranny could be overheating at startup after sitting for a long time. This definitely sounds like a faulty sensor. Looking at the picture it appears the sensor screws into the side of the transmission but I'm too lazy at the moment to verify that in the RAVE manual.
