Default Trans Fill/CheckPlug free flowing

While checking the transmission fluid level I removed the fill/check plug and fluid came gushing out. I did have a clean catch pan under it and caught all of the fluid. Looks like about 4 quarts came out. I thought that it should only trickle out if it was at a proper level. How do I get the fluid back in and keep it from spilling back out? Is there undue pressure from somewhere causing this? Any thoughts?

Well, now you get to do a fluid change. When checking the fluid level, you start the engine, shift drive to reverse 2 time, go back to park and with the engine RUNNING, you either check or add fluid to the tranny.

Aha, should have checked it while engine was running. Headed to auto parts store now.
