transfer box change out
Hey all, Anyone ever chnge out a transfer box at home? Sorry i ask but my laptop is out for service at HP and i dont have my RAVE available. Just currious on time and difficulty. It's for a 2004 SE7 that the transfer box is whining on deceleration. I have located a few transfer boxs but would like to save on labor. Have jack stands and tools. Have done most work on my daughters 2000 SE Disco and my old RR 4.0 SE. Any advice well taken. I have a transmission guy threw a friend of mine that would changeout for under $300.00. It's a friends friend. Most places are quoting $500.00 - $700.00 to do the work.
Thanks Chris

Hey Mike
Hey Mike, I though it was to but i took it to a friend of mine who is a Ex Land Rover Service manager and we drove it and then he put it on the lift with the tires off the lift. Ran with the wheels running and you can hear right from the transferbox. SHifts from H to L to locked no problem. It only make the whining grind sound when you take your foot off the gas when you go over 30 miles an hour. Its like a turbine sound or somthing. If you touch the gas it goes away or when you go below 20 miles a hour. I bought the truck and then took back when i heard the noise. They said they would refund my depoit but the truck is in 99% condition and i got a great deal... yea, the grinding noise. My Land Rover guy showed me that the cross member was taken off as the bolts wher cut. He said maybe someone serviced it and left it oil low maybe. It had a couple of drips on the botom. He said i should replace it. The place i got it from has offered to get there trannsmission guy to do the labor at about half of what my local indy rover place quoted. I would love your feedback on this ..
Thanks Chris
Thanks Chris

To answer your original question, yes it can be done at home if it turns out yours needs to be replaced. The rave instructions are easy to follow. First be aware the transfer case is very heavy. The big problem I had was that I couldn't get the truck up high enough with jack stands to get the transfer case out and in under the frame while on my floor jack. I had to wrestle the transfer case off and on the jack while it was under the truck.
Oh, and don't skip the step where it says to drain the oil from the transfer case, you'll take a bath in gear oil otherwise.
