You need a long ratchet or breaker bar and a 6-10" 1/2" drive wobble extension though a regular extension will work too. If you leave your e-brake off the cable will be more flexible. No you don't have to take off the cover.

No need to remove the inspection plate, make sure you remove the fill plug before you drain the case.

X2 on remove fill plug first. You don't want to drain it and not be able to put new back in.

Also, forget the breaker bar. Definitely use a ratchet even if you have to borrow or buy a cheap one. While you might need a breaker bar to start it loose, you'll be kicking yourself if you use it to remove it the whole way. It's square drive, so you have 90 or 180 deg intervals to reposition. And it's kinda tight under there. Don't ask how I know. Let's just say, 1/2 hour into it I was glad I started with the fill plug. Geesh.

Who would use a breaker bar to remove a plug like that all the way? That makes no sense. If you have never opened the plugs before you will be glad to have a breaker bar to get it started.

I made no sense alright, but till then I had been functioning with a 1/2" Breaker bar and 1/2"-3/8" drive adapter and a 3/8" ratchet and 3/8"-1/2" drive adapter.

I had the bases covered for the most part. Unfortunatley there wasn't room for the ratchet with the adapter. And I didn't have a 1/2" ratchet. Guess I left that part out.
