Default Transfer case not engaging 4 high all the way?

Hey guys, does it look like my transfer case isn't engaging 4 high all the way? It shifts into 4low fine but it doesn't seem to go into 4high all the way.

When I first got the truck it would not shift into neutral or 4low and the shop removed the lockout solenoid to get it to shift.

I also have a whining at speed when I'm on the throttle on the highway that I suspect is coming from the t-case. I'd like to replace it with one from an 04.

Thoughts?

if you are moving at highway speeds then you are in 4 high.

the transfer case has 4 high, neutral and 4 low.

Yeah I mean I'm def in 4 high but am I allll the way in or does that not make any sense? Just doesn't feel like it clicks into it and there's a lot of play as you can see.

Just the position of the handle looks higher than others I've seen.

are you afraid it will pop out of gear into neutral while you are driving?

i did just see your other post about the transmission shifter and there is a possibility you have something small keeping the T-case shifter from seating properly.

I'm just wondering if its mechanically sound and engaging all the way - the whining I have I think is the gears on the t-case but was hoping maybe it was something to do with the shifter that could be remedied. Not sure why it looks that way. I dont have another pic handy of a D2 without CDL to compare.

i have an '04 with the locking diff, so i think mine sits at rest a little different. hell, these are Land Rovers, so even the trucks that rolled off the assembly line before and after yours may have T-case shifters that rest differently.

i had a whine from the Transfer case for a while but switching to a synthetic gear oil eliminated it. could be that yours just needs a refresh. then again, some will tell you that a little whine is nothing to worry about.

I changed the fluid recently - the whine is so obnoxious on the highway.

Turn the ignition on but do not start the truck. Shift into D and see if you can move the lever from H to L. If no, then you should be fully in H and the solenoid is locking it there as it should and all is well. Although, my solenoid is on the shifter and I think yours is on the top of the T-case so it may behave differently than mine.

Regardless, I don't think that would be the cause of the whine. Did it just start? Is it the same on or off of the gas?

Solenoid has been removed. When i bought the truck it was not shifting into 4 low (stuck in 4 high).

The whine is only when I'm on the throttle.
