Hey Guys, winters coming and I've been driving the LR more often and really need to get the transfer case replaced, I live in an apartment complex where they do not allow you to work on vechicles so I will be taking it to a shop.. My question is what is a fair price or idea of amount of time it will take for a shop to swap one for me..

While you are doing this may want to rebuild drive shafts with new universals. There is no better time. You'll want to call a few shops and get their labor rate and hour estimate, and indy is better, some national brand shop may not touch it if you supply parts. There are two types of TC for a D2, yours may be the earlier one with the CDL spot, but no linkage. Might want to add that as well.

 

I do have the cdl option with the cable, I have been driving it around in 2wd as the front drive shaft failed, so I removed it.

 

So what is wrong with your current t/case?

 

my current case has been thru hell durring a recient move, it wont hold oil for more then 5 mins and makes alot of noise also its almost impossible shift.. I also found metal scalling on the drain plug of the case..

Also due to my living situation its easier to have one swaped then pay the labor to have seals changed and hope all else is fine.

 

The "official" Land Rover shop time on T-Box replacement is 3.7 hours.

 

Wow so I requested a few quotes from local shops and one guy said 1226.10 for labor and fluid.. MY GOD... So i think im gonna tackle it in a parking lot somewhere around here... kinda sucks but there is no way im paying 1.2k for something that should be done in 4 hours. I have the rave manual and it shows everything I could ever want to know about the t-case it but no removal guide.. I was hoping someone might have a write up handy or link to one..

Look under Transfer Box- LT230SE, Repairs, Transfer box - V8. Article 41.20.25.99.

 

either find a good friend that will rent you his garage for a case of beer or rent a 12'x20' storage locker. When I lived in an apartment that is where i used to build my bikes in 8'x12' storage lockers, some give you 24-7 access with a card swip.

 

Also look in the D1 manual under transfer case special tools and build the jack adapter they have plans for. It makes a big difference on removal.
I also highly recommend a transmission jack to attach it to to allow you to tilt it to the correct angle to mate up.
Also, there is a locating bushing between the transmission and the transfer case. Sometimes it stays in the transmission, sometimes it stays in the transfer case. Make sure it's in one or the other, and not both. Don't ask how I know.
